REGULATION   2

EQUAL OPPORTUNTIES POLICY

1.         The Union recognizes that discrimination is a waste of human resources.  It denies the individual the opportunity to fulfill his/her potential.  Equal opportunities can only be achieved by the active support of the whole Union.  The ultimate goal is to achieve a positive atmosphere in which all individuals may contribute as fully as possible without fear or discriminatory attitudes and practices.

2.         The Union aims to be an equal opportunities employer, where no employee or job applicant receives discrimination or harassment based on any personal characteristics of the individual.  The Union adheres to an open and fair recruitment process.

3.         The Union is committed to an environment that is free of intimidation and unlawful harassment.  The Union deplores all forms of harassment, harassment based on sexual orientation, gender, HIV status, age, physical and learning disability and other irrelevant distinctions are also classed as gross misconduct.

4.         The Union believes that clubs and societies should be open and accessible to all students and that every member should be given the opportunity for involvement.  To this end all clubs and societies should promote a welcoming atmosphere of non-exclusivity for members and potential members alike.  All clubs and societies shall abide by the regulations specified in Part C Section 3 of the Equal Opportunities Policy.

5.         The Union recognizes the wide range of tastes and interests held by its members and seeks to ensure that, wherever possible, the entertainment within the Union reflects such diversity.  The Union must adhere to Part C Section 3 of the Equal Opportunities Policy.

6.         All publicity within the Union must conform to the postering policy and be sensitive to the diverse nature of the Union membership.  All publicity and publications written in the name of the Union should be non-offensive and not discriminate against on any of the grounds stated in Section 2.7 of the Constitution.  All publicity and publications must be written in English.

7.         The Equal Opportunities and Welfare Committee is a Standing Committee of the Union and shall adhere to Schedule 5, Section 1 of the Constitution.  The Equal Opportunities and Welfare Committee shall monitor the implementation of the Union’s Equal Opportunities Policy and make recommendations to the Executive Committee for improvements in the Executive Committee for improvements in the overall policy and procedures for its implementation.

8.         Overall responsibility for the implementation of the Equal Opportunities Policy shall be that of the Equal Opportunities Officer, the VP-Education, Welfare and Representation, the President and the General Manager.  Anyone found contravening any part will be disciplined in accordance with Regulation 10.

Equal Opportunities

Policy Statement

Queen Mary and Westfield College is committed to the provision of equality of opportunity for all its students and staff. Article 5 of the College Charter states that the College should carry out its work "in a spirit of tolerance and freedom of opinion, mutual concern and community service". In furtherance of this article, the College aims to create and maintain an appropriate environment in which all people can learn, work and interact freely without fear of discrimination, prejudice or harassment.

All students and staff of the College will be treated equitably and will not be accorded less favourable treatment on such grounds as gender, age, marital status, disability, race, colour, ethnic or national origin, sexual orientation, family circumstances, religious or political beliefs. The only consideration must be that the individual is able to satisfy the requirements of the programme of study or post. The principles of this Policy will apply to visitors and contractors whilst on the College premises.

The College confirms its commitment to develop, implement and monitor a programme of equality measures so that unjustifiable barriers to educational and employment opportunities are removed. This will enable the College to achieve a diverse student population and workforce that is representative of the communities it serves.

"The College is proud of its diverse origins and the pursuit of equal opportunities is deeply embedded in its founding traditions. Our commitment to these goals remains strong and clear"
